Mixed Age Family Class

This is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five—and through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers, grouping children of a variety of ages in one class. This approach fosters natural, family-style learning where younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together.

Each child participates at his or her own developmental level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, observing, or exploring musical instruments. We welcome the whole family to join in this important family music experience, and any caregiver—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the child(ren) to class.

Each semester includes:

  • Weekly 45-minute classes teaching a new song collection every fall, winter and spring.
  • New CDs each semester with the songs, rhythm chants, "play-alongs," tonal and rhythm patterns used in class.
  • Beautifully illustrated songbook with family activities to enjoy at home.
  • Parent education resources and online resources.
Babies Class

Every child’s development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies ages eight months and younger. Babies are always welcome to attend a Mixed Age Family Class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister.

Parents with infants may also register for the special “Babies Class,” which is offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together, after which babies will attend mixed-age classes. The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in babies. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby.

Demo Class

Families who are new to Music Together are invited to attend one free demonstration class.

Rhythm Kids Level 1

Rhythm Kids Level 1 is for children 4 and 5 years old. Each week we drum, sing, dance, play rhythm instruments, and begin to play music-based games. Rhythm Kids Level 1 guides children toward developmentally appropriate music and movement activities, where they can begin to take charge, lead others, and be musically creative, as they:

  • make up their own drumming patterns

  • invent new ways to play rhythm instruments (shakers, sticks, etc.)

  • create movement ideas for songs

  • even take a drum solo!

Rhythm Kids Level 1 carries on the Music Together® vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age eight. Classes and include:

  • 10 weekly, 45-minute classes

  • Songbook and CD (2 copies) each semester

  • Access to online drum-play videos and other material

Children will:

  • Explore the world of rhythm through movement, instrument play, and song

  • Develop basic rhythm skills, like keeping beat, improvising, ensemble play, and soloing

  • Learn to create, cooperate, and express themselves musically

Drums will be provided for the class each week, but if you’d like your child to have a drum to play with at home (and then continue to use in Level 2 classes!), please ask your teacher about the special discounts on djembe drums that are available to Music Together families.

Rhythm Kids Level 1 is a drop-off optional class. Parents are welcome to stay and participate or children may attend on their own, if they're ready.

Tuition for all Music Together classes includes family materials to use at home (e.g., recordings of our award-winning music, illustrated songbook, parent education resources).

Rhythm Kids Level 2

In Rhythm Kids® Level 2 classes, students ages 5 1/2 to 7 years old explore rhythm by playing with music from around the world. Music
Together–trained teachers lead dynamic classroom activities designed especially for early elementary students, and the discovery continues at home with the interactive Rhythm Kids videos, easily viewable on our app. As they drum, sing, and move to new rhythms, children naturally build musicality that helps them prepare for formal music lessons. Opportunities to solo, work in ensembles, and improvise support social and listening skills, self-expression, and self-confidence. Rhythm Kids Level 2 guides children toward developmentally appropriate music and movement activities, where they can begin to take charge, lead others, and be musically creative, as they:

  • make up their own drumming patterns

  • invent new ways to play rhythm instruments (shakers, sticks, etc.)

  • even take a drum solo!
